South Korea¡¯s global top electronic maker Samsung Electronics is planning to convert its memory chip manufacturing facilities in Giheung, Korea and Austin, Texas, into non-memory chip manufacturing lines.
The global company is also expected to modify some of its large-size LCD (liquid-crystal display) panel manufacturing facilities, which are now incorporated into Samsung Display, into OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel manufacturing lines.
Samsung Electronics is expected to convert its eighth manufacturing line in Giheung, which mainly churns out DRAMs (dynamic random access memories), and NAND flash manufacturing facility in Austin into non-memory chip production lines within this year, according to sources in the electronics industry.
¡°As demand for system semiconductors climbed, Samsung might consider additionally turning its memory chip production lines into non-memory chip manufacturing facilities,¡± Samsung Electronics Executive Director Kim Myung-ho said.
¡°All memory-chip manufacturing facilities both in Korea and overseas will be considered for such changes.¡±
An executive director of the company explained the circumstance that ¡°As demand for system semiconductors climbed, Samsung might consider additionally turning its memory chip production lines into non-memory chip manufacturing facilities.
¡°All memory-chip manufacturing facilities both in Korea and overseas will be considered for such changes.¡± Samsung Electronics is quickly expanding its system memory manufacturing facilities in an attempt to meet surging demand of non- emory chips for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is considering an option to convert some of its eighth-generation large-size LCD panel manufacturing lines in Tangjeong, South Chungcheong Province into OLED TV panel lines.
As Samsung Display, the spun-off LCD unit, and Samsung Mobile Display (SMD), which is in charge of Samsung¡¯s OLED business, will be merged starting from July 1 this year, Samsung is likely to speed up the expansion of its OLED panel manufacturing lines.
A Samsung official added ¡°Samsung Electronics¡¯ LCD unit secured sufficient technology, human resources, and manufacturing facilities for producing large-size display panels for TVs.
If such resources are employed by SMD, a firm foundation will be established to mass-produce OLED TV panels at lower costs.¡±
