South Korea¡¯s shipbuilders¡¯ performance last year in terms of their total amount of sale and supply contracts
was impressive, in contrast to the number of construction firms that were declining during the same period.
The listed local firms that amount to 108 posted an $US 72.77 billion in a total of 234 cases of sales and
supply contracts last year, down 14.15 percent from the previous year¡¯s record.
By industry, sales and supply contracts gained 64.77 percent in the shipbuilding industry to 29.25 trillion
won while those of the listed construction companies plunged 45.51 percent to 17.68 trillion won. Sales and
contracts of listed firms in other industries went down 22.70 percent to 34.70 trillion won.
The record of the listed firms¡¯ export-related contracts slid down 27.09 percent from the previous year to
56.74 trillion won last year, and domestic market-related contract amount surged 44.18 percent to
24.89 trillion won.
Export and domestic contracts surged 62.19 percent and 168.86 percent, respectively, for shipbuilders while
those of construction companies were reduced by 54.64 percent and 17.55 percent, respectively.
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), a leading local shipbuilder, recorded the largest
amount of 12.26 trillion won in sales and orders, and the amount was attained from 10 shipbuilding orders
last year including an order to build 10 large-size container ships.
By contract amount, Samsung Heavy Industries(11.38 trillion won), Korea Gas Corporation(10.22 trillion won),
OCI(5.88 trillion won), and Samsung Engineering and Construction(5.76 trillion won) were included in the top
five companies that disclosed the largest amounts in sales and contracts.
The listed companies¡¯ sales and supply contracts for this year were climbed to 8.68 trillion won as of Feb. 16,
up 35.03 percent from the previous year.
For the year of 2012, the volume of sales and contracts soared 281.68 percent in the shipbuilding industry to
4.36 trillion won while those of construction firms gained a mere 2.25 percent, rising to 2.94 trillion won.
Sales and supply contracts in other industries were slashed by 31.15 percent to 2.23 trillion won.
The listed companies¡¯ aggregated exports rose 10.84 percent to 4.50 trillion won and their sales and supply
contracts in the domestic market grew 74.33 percent to 4.27 trillion won.
