Samsung Heavy Industries has already built the world's largest number of ships in the drill ship and FPSO sectors, and has demonstrated excellent turnkey production capability in fixed platforms, TLP and LNG- FPSO by securing the top-side design and construction technology, which is the key to offshore facilities, based on the shipbuilding technology expertise that it has accumulated over the years.
The LNG-FPSO developed by Samsung Heavy Industries, the first ship of its kind in the world, is an innovative ship that enables the production, liquefaction and storage of LNG.
In 2009, SHI was selected by Royal Dutch Shell, the world's largest energy firm, to be its exclusive supplier of LNG-FPSO. Under the contract, the Company will supply LNGFPSO ships for the next 15 years, in a deal worth up to US$ 50 billion.
Since winning the order for EPMI Palas/Tabu-A Platform, an offshore oil drilling facility, in 1984, SHI has scored remarkable achievements in the offshore platform sector for the development of undersea resources by producing crude oil production facilities, gas production facilities and drilling facilities.
In 2006 and 2007, the company successfully delivered two units of the world's largest offshore platforms to Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. in Russia. In 2008 and 2009, SHI also successfully delivered two units of the world's largest semi-submersible drilling facilities, West Phoenix and Eminance, to Sea Drill, a Norwegian oil exploration firm, proving its excellence in the offshore platform building technology and strengthening its reputation in the global offshore industry.
Furthermore, the company is currently accelerating its strategic movement of manufacturing high-efficiency eco-friendly ships to preemptively secure a stable share of the worldwide shipbuilding markets that it has successfully made a contract manufacturing 20 containerships. As eco-friendly vessels they help in saving 30,000 tons of fuels and cutting 80,000 tons of carbon emissions, from a Taiwan-based enterprise.
