South Korea¡¯s LG Electronics and LG Display (LGD) unveiled the world¡¯s first 55-inch OLED TV and 55-inch OLED TV panel, respectively at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world¡¯s largest consumer technology tradeshow held in Las Vegas, USA.
This 55-inch panel is the largest OLED TV developed to date. OLED (Organic Light-emitting Diode) displays feature new technology that allows diodes to self-generate lights. OLED panels also boast ultra-thin design while weighing only onethird of its LCD equivalent. The largest-ever OLED panel also produces outstanding image quality with wider range of colors than standard LGDs.
LGD plans to start commercial production of the panels by the second half of this year at the earliest, and to supply them to TV makers like LG Electronics. The industry official estimated that the 55-inch OLED TV will be priced at roughly three-fold the listed value of the 55-inch LED TV. Given that LGD¡¯s OLED operations are currently centered on three-inch smartphone panels, the production units of OLED panels are not decided yet.
LGD to become world¡¯s first to massproduce 84-inch TV panels
South Korea¡¯s leading display maker LG Display (LGD) will start commercial production of 84-inch LCD panels commencing May this year, making it the first company in the world to mass-produce oversized panels. ¡°LGD will start churning out 84-inch panels from May 2012, which will be the largest panels to be massproduced to date,¡± said a company spokesperson.
The new product will be an UD (ultra definition) TV panel which boasts eight million pixel resolution - four times the resolution clarity of existing full HD TV panels. LGD has completed the product development phase for the panel.
LG Electronics is believed to soon follow LGD¡¯s move by releasing 84-inch UD TVs in the market. LG Electronics has successfully unveiled its ultra-large UD TV this year¡¯s CES (Consumer Electronics Show), drawing keen attention from visitors, including many industry officials.
Industry sources believe that the products will hit the markets by the second half of this year, and cost roughly 10 million won (US$8,641.25).
